The Olifants River Valley stretches north from Citrusdal (citrus fruit farming country) to Namakwaland in the far North of the Northern Cape in South Africa. The Main Route through this part of the Western Cape is known as the N7. A natural boundary formed by part of the Cape Fold Belt includes mountain ranges such as the Cederberg, Gifberg, Matsikamma and Bokkeveld mountains. These mountains have fantastic rock formations.
The Olifants River Valley has a unique beauty of its own. The name of this region is derived from the elephants that where spotted here over 300 years ago by the first pioneers who explored the region. The Olifants River Wine Route is producing some fine white and red wines. Roaming through the old missionary towns and stations one can explore this region's historical heritage or roam through the fynbos. Savour some tea from the unique Rooibos Tea plant, or visit the succulent nursery and ‘Knersvlakte’ at Vanrhynsdorp as well as its wealth of flora.
