Vanrhynsdorp

Watched over by the majestic Maskam - part of the Matsikamma range - Vanrhynsdorp was founded in 1751 as Trutro (Troe-Troe). 1881 saw the name changed to the present one in honour of the Van Rhijn family for their invaluable contributions to the community. For travellers from the North (Namibia) and North East (Gauteng, Free State, etc) Vanrhynsdorp serves as an ideal entry and stop over point to explore the West Coast.

It is also the gateway to Namaqualand, Hantam Karoo and the Cederberg. The village is accessed from the N7 (Cape Town - Namibia) or the R27 from Calvinia via the Vanrhyn's Pass through the Bokkeveld Mountains.
