Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is characterised by vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds, and situated right in the centre of Botswana.
There are four entrance gates to the game reserve: Matswere Gate in the North-East, this gate is reached from Rakops; Xade Gate, that is on the West towards Namibia and near Ghanzi; Tsau Gate on the North-West, that is connected to the road halfway between the main road from Ghanzi and Maun, and is frequented by most travellers going to Namibia or Maun. The fourth gate is the Southern Gate, which as its name implies lies in the south and connects to Khutse Game Reserve.
There are 6 available campsites in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve which lie in the area between the Tsau Gate and the Matswere Gate. The following campsites are available: Motopi Pan (south east from Matswere), Passarge Pan (about 30 km south east from Motopi), Sunday Pan (about 57 km north east from Passarge Pan), Lekhubu Pan and Letiahau (just wilderness, campsite without facilities, south from Sunday Pan) and Piper Pan (about 110 km south west from Sunday Pan). A couple more campsites (Deception, Kori, Leopard, Phokoje, Xade, Bape and Xaka) are scattered in the northern and central part and are bookable through DWNP (Department of Wildlife and National Parks in Botswana).
A minimum 2 nights stay is strongly recommended in the reserve, as maximum speed limits of 40 km/h and thick sand make for slow driving. A 4x4 vehicle is compulsory.
