Drakensberg - Tsehlanyane National Park

This self-drive tour will provide you with scenic nature views, abundant birdlife and a breath-taking cultural experience.

From the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains, to the adventurous Sani Pass up to the impressive Katse Dam, every day boats a new adventure and an opportunity to enjoy breath-taking views and to discover new landmarks. The tour has a duration of 6 days and can also be reversed, starting in the Tshelanyane National Park and ending in Bergville.

Drakensberg Mountains - the main mountain range of Southern Africa.

Coleford Nature Reserve - through its southern section flows the Ngwagwane River, one of its major features.

Sani Pass - Sani Pass, a world heritage site, is a mountain pass located on the border between South Africa and Lesotho 2874 metres above sea level.

Katse Dam - The Katse Dam, in the Lesotho Highlands, is one of the most spectacular water features in the country.

Tsehlanyane National Park- it is only one of two national parks in Lesotho, and makes up an intergral part of the greater Maloti/Drankensberg Transfrontier Park.

Day 1: Bergville

Start of your journey. It is recommended to make use of a Lesotho high ground clearance vehicle and ideally a 4x4. Your target for the day is Bergville. Please take this into consideration when choosing your starting point. Equidistant from Johannesburg and Durban, Bergville, also known as the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg, lies on Route 74 - the more scenic alternative to the Toll Road. This route takes you via the Oliviershoek Pass and through Winterton from Durban. The town lies on the banks of the Tugela River. Here you will be able to admire the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains - the main mountain range of Southern Africa. The Drakensberg rises to more than 3,475 metres and extends roughly northeast to southwest for 1,125 km parallel to the southeastern coast of South Africa.

Day 2: Underberg

The distance between Bergville and Underberg is roughly a three-hour drive. Underberg is an administrative town in a dairy and cattle farming community in the Mzimkulu River valley and offers a lot of activities for nature lovers. You will be able to visit the Coleford Nature Reserve. The area has for years been popular as a destination for fly fishing because of the availability of rainbow trout in the Coleford reserve's river. A little west of the twin villages of Himeville and Underberg, on the border with Lesotho, you can find the southernmost part of the Drakensberg and the Mzimkhulu Wilderness Area.

Day 3: Sani Pass

Today you will make up your way across the famous Sani Pass to the Sani Mountain Lodge, which is situated on top of it. The route up Sani Pass starts at 1544 m, and climbs 1332 vertical metres to an altitude of 2874 m. The road is a steep gravel road with gradients up to 1:3, which can be difficult to drive in bad weather and may be covered with snow and ice in winter. The pass lies between the border controls of both countries and is approximately 9 km in length.
