This self-drive tour is especially tailored for nature lovers who will appreciate the vastness of this beautiful country and the magnificent landscapes that also boast a variety of different wildlife species.

From the impressive Phophonyane Falls to the different game reserves (Mkhaya Game Reserve, Hlane National Park and Mlilwane Wildlife Reserve) which each surprise with a different set-up and an individual approach to conservation, everyday will feel like a new adventure.

The tour is 5 days long and can also be reversed, starting in the Hlane Royal National Park and ending in Piggs Peak.

Phophonyane Falls - 80 meters high. Exposed at this point are some of the world's oldest rocks dated at 3.55 billion years.

Mlilwane Wildlife Resort - it offers a great diversity of habitats including riverine, forest, mountain, aquatic and grassland.

Mkhaya Game Reserve - is home to Swaziland’s only buffalo, black rhino, sable antelope, Livingstone’s eland and tsessebe populations.

Hlane Royal National Park – the 22,000-ha park boasts ancient hardwood habitats, big game and rich birdlife.

Day 1: Piggs Peak

The start of your journey. Today you are driving to the Phophonyane Eco Lodge. Phophonyane lies in the north west of Swaziland and 70 km south of the Kruger National Park's Malelane Gate. Please take this into consideration when choosing your starting point. Upon arrival you will be able to enjoy spectacular scenic views. The Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve has a rich botanical diversity. Furthermore the 600-ha reserve is home to 240 species of birds and some of the world's most interesting geological features. A network of trails wind through the forests, crossing waterways and finally culminating on the lip of 80m high Phophonyane Falls. Exposed at this point are some of the world's oldest rocks dated at 3.55 billion years.

Day 2: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Today you will be driving from the Phophonyane Falls Eco Lodge to the Mlilwane Rest Camp. The distance is about 100 km. The name 'Mlilwane' ('Little Fire' in siSwati) was derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane hill but now holds significance as the little fire that ignited the conservation movement in Swaziland. Due to the relative absence of dangerous game guided or self-guided exploration within the small 4560 ha sanctuary is possible.

Day 3: Mkhaya Game Reserve

Today you will be driving from the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary to the Mkhaya Game Reserve. The distance is approximately 75 km and it will take about an 1 hour drive to get there. Mkhaya has a number of fenced off areas to enable security for endangered species. With very strict conservation security, Mkhaya is now home to Swaziland’s only buffalo, black rhino, sable antelope, Livingstone’s eland and tsessebe populations. You will be sleeping at Stone Camp tonight. Please be advised that at the game reserve your vehicle is not taken into the reserve and you should pack a small overnight bag to be transported to the camp as the game viewers cannot transport your full luggage. Your vehicle is left in a safe, securely fenced area outside the reserve if the river cannot be crossed, or just inside the reserve at the Ranger Base Station. You can pre-book a time (either 10 AM or 4 PM) and will be met at the meeting point at this time. No entry will take place after 5 PM. Game Walks – The scheduled Game Walk is only available to those guests who have booked to arrive at 4 PM and depart at 4 PM next day as the walk happens at 11 AM.
